»In her chapter, Stephanie Patrick also examines the effects of sexual and gendered violence on marginalized groups, highlighting the portrayal of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) and violence against the LGBTQ2S+ community in Canada. Taking a political economic lens to the widely popular format of true crime, she analyzes two podcasts produced by the Canadian public broadcaster (CBC) which highlight structural violence against marginalized groups. Patrick argues that true crime produced outside of the proft imperative can promote a more active and implicated “listener-citizen” whose consumption of sexual violence is made to be uncomfortable, rather than insatiable.«

»Raped and murdered women have in many ways formed the backbone of the podcast industry. Unlike television and film, however, a significant portion of true crime podcasts are produced and distributed by public broadcasting companies. This chapter examines the CBC’s approach to true crime using two case studies: Missing & Murdered (2018–2019), which tackles different cases of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Girls and Women in Canada and Uncover: The Village (2019–2021) about ongoing violence against Toronto’s LGBTQ2S+ community. The author examines how the ethos and mission of public broadcasting standards reflects a concern with honoring, rather than exploiting victims while highlighting structural, rather than individual, causes of violence. The author argues that CBC true crime podcasts disrupt the passive, liberal consumption model which masks corporate media profit structures behind social justice themes and, instead, asks more from its listeners than to merely sit back, pick a crime, and binge away.«
